NECK SUPPORT

Pillow choice is very personal. Some people like a soft pillow that moulds to their body and other people want a firm pillow to support their head and neck.

Pillows vary in feel and height. You need a pillow that sits in the crevice between your head and shoulder, without raising or lowering your head.

Your sleeping posture should be the same as your correct standing posture. An incorrect pillow can result in poor posture, neck pain and headaches.

Tontine have developed a range of pillows to mould to the shape of your head and neck to provide correct spinal alignment.

These pillows relieve neck pain caused by incorrect sleeping position and have been endorsed by the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

ASTHMA & ALLERGIES

If you suffer from asthma or allergies, rest assured, Tontine has a solution. Our range of products include allergy sensitive, washable pillows, quilts, mattress and pillow protectors.

As the name suggests, they can be machine washed to help to remove dust and allergens, plus they also have the added benefit of Bioguard® treatment, which inhibits the growth of bacteria, dust mites, mould and mildew. Our range can be hot-washed at over 60 degrees Celsius without losing its Bioguard® treatment.

Over 10% of the population suffer from asthma and 40% from allergies. The Sensitive Choice program has been launched by the National Asthma Council to help Australians make better lifestyle choices that may help manage asthma and allergies more effectively. Each Tontine Allergy Sensitive pillow and quilt has been accepted into the Sensitive Choice program by the National Asthma Council Australia, and carries the Sensitive Choice butterfly logo.

For asthma and allergy sufferers, Tontine recommends:

  • Use bedding products and bedding accessories that have an anti-microbial treatment
  • Keep the bedroom well lit and well ventilated
  • For hygiene purposes, ensure all bedding is washed on a regular basis including pillows and quilts-not only protectors
  • Regular airing of bedding
  • Never use or store damp bedding products
  • Check labels for washing instructions

Memory foam was developed in 1966 under a contract by NASA's Ames Research Center to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. Ames scientist Chiharu Kubokawa and Charles A. Yost of the Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation were major contributors to this project. The temperature-sensitive memory foam was initially referred to as “slow spring back foam”; Yost called it "temper foam". Created by feeding gas into a polymer matrix, the foam has an open-cell solid structure that matches pressure against it, yet slowly springs back to its original shape.

Yost later founded Dynamic Systems Inc. in collaboration with NASA to commercialize the foam, including it in both medical equipment such as X-ray table pads and sports equipment such as football helmet liners. After Dynamic Systems sold memory foam products to Becton, the range of products was expanded.

When NASA released memory foam to the public domain in the early 1980s, Fagerdala World Foams was one of the few companies willing to work with the foam, as the manufacturing process remained difficult and unreliable. Their 1991 product, the "Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress" eventually led to the mattress and cushion company, Tempur World.

Memory foam was subsequently used in medical settings. For example, it was commonly utilized in cases where the patient was required to lie immobile in their bed on a firm mattress for an unhealthy period of time. The pressure over some of their body regions decreased or stopped the blood flow to the region causing pressure sores or gangrene. Memory foam mattresses significantly decreased such events.

Memory foam was initially too expensive for widespread use,but became cheaper. Its most common domestic uses are mattresses, pillows, and blankets. It has medical uses, such as wheelchair seat cushions, hospital bed pillows and padding for persons suffering long-term pain or postural problems; for example, a memory foam cervical pillow may alleviate chronic neck pain. Its heat-retaining properties may help some pain sufferers who find the added warmth helps to decrease the pain.

Unfortunately, the heat-retaining properties can also be a downside when used in mattresses and pillows so in the 2nd generation memory foam, companies began using open cell structure to better help with breathability. In 2006, the 3rd generation of memory foam was introduced. Gel visco or gel memory foam consists of gel particles fused with visco foam to reduce trapped body heat, speed up spring back time and help the mattress feel softer. It was jointly developed by Dynamic Systems Inc. and Thurmo-Pudic USA. Although various bedding companies experimented with the material, gel mattresses did not become popular until the introduction of Serta’s iComfort line in 2011.

Since the development of gel memory foam, other materials have been added. Aloe vera, green tea extract and activated charcoal have been combined with the foam to reduce odors and even provide aromatherapy while sleeping. Bamboo fiber has been used in woven mattress covers over memory foam beds to wick moisture away from the body to increase comfort.

Finding the Perfect Pillow

A particular point to take note of during your selection process is the mattress to which the pillow will be matched. If you have a latex mattress for example, a pillow made from the same latex material will help to evenly distribute your body weight.

The right pillow is a vital part of a good night's sleep. Don’t subject yourself to one more uncomfortable, restless night.

Sleepdoctor is your one stop online source for pillows of every type and price. Our quality selection, competitive pricing and exellent customer service will help you find your very own perfect pillow.

What is the Best Pillow for me?

Feather down pillows are widely considered to be the most comfortable. However, they are also the most expensive.

Apart from the higher cost of investment, it is also worth considering that many people are allergic to feather down pillows, so they may not be the best choice for everyone and every budget. However, Sleepdoctor offers down-filled pillows at lower prices than most offline retailers.
